If you’re here, you probably felt a tingling sensation in your hands. It is a widespread phenomenon among people. But having just felt this symptom, it is crucial not to panic. Usually, this does not entail exceedingly terrible consequences. But in the case of ignoring it, it can still happen.

Let’s start with the fact that tingling in the hands is a sense of discomfort. It may be accompanied by numbness of the whole hand, part, or fingers. This irritated sensation can have a multitude of causes. It includes nerve damage, compression, circulatory issues, or joint problems. But with early diagnosis, you can prevent the top of hand tingling from worsening.

Thus, when you feel such discomfort, first think about the reasons. It will soon pass if it’s from holding your hand in one position, for example. But if this feeling worsens and does not disappear for long, think about how to stop tingling in your hands.

Possible Causes of Top of Hands Tingling

The human body is a complex mechanism that communicates with you. With the help of symptoms, it signals what is happening inside. And if the same sign repeats often, the body tells you about some problem. One of the most common alerts is the top of your hands tingling. This symptom can appear due to clenching of the hand or in a moment of stress. It can also be due to nervousness and become constant and dangerous. Therefore, it is worth knowing the possible causes of tingling in the upper part of the hands.

There are many options for this. For example, cervical spine diseases can lead to tingling in the right or left thumb. It results from compression of the nerves that exit the vertebrae. This condition can be due to trauma, chronic stress, or age-related changes in the vertebra. Regardless of the reason, it can be very unpleasant and need serious treatment.

Caution in such cases is always worthwhile. After all, it needs a detailed analysis when it comes to tingling. If you constantly feel this, then you need to contact a specialist. Self-reliance can lead to further complications. So, it is worth seeking help on time to determine the exact cause. Here is the list of the most common bases for the top of hands tingling:

1. Pinched nerve

Prickling most often occurs due to disturbances in the nervous system. It ensures the perception and transmission of signals between the brain and other body parts. When a nerve is pinched under pressure or overuse, it can lead to hand pain.

A pinched nerve can occur anywhere from the brain to the hand. But the ulnar nerve, that is, the area of the hand, is most often affected. It can result from sleeping in an uncomfortable position or an injury during sports. As a result, it can provoke tingling in the hands. You may feel pain in a specific position or feel your hands go numb.

2. Lack of vitamin B12

Everyone knows how significant the presence of vitamins is in the human body. But not everyone follows this, which leads to bad consequences. One of them is that your hands tingle at night and day. It occurs due to a lack of vitamin B12 in the body.

Vitamin B12 is vital for the proper functioning of the nervous system. It promotes the production of inositol. It is a substance that affects the membranes of nerve cells. A deficiency of this vitamin can lead to the degradation of the nerve myelin sheath. It can cause hand prickling, which becomes especially evident when performing movements. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also affect the formation of red blood cells. If the level of vitamin B12 drops, this leads to insufficient oxygen supply to the nerve cells. It can also cause tingling in the hands.

3. Carpal tunnel syndrome

If you feel tingling in your hands, especially in the wrist area, maybe you have carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a prevalent problem among office workers, musicians, and athletes. It is because they often have to function with their hands in one position. Have you noticed how you start to feel a tingling in your right thumb by scrolling social networks all day? It occurs due to the appearance of carpal tunnel syndrome.

It can happen due to tissue swelling surrounding the carpal tunnel. When a nerve is compressed, tingling in the hands is one of the most apparent symptoms.

4. Autoimmune diseases

Some autoimmune diseases can affect your hands. It causes them to tingle. This can be due to inflammation in the joints of the hands, muscles, and tendon structures. They lead to nerve compression. Accordingly, a person feels prickling sensations.

When an autoimmune disease occurs, the body’s immune system attacks its tissues. It is the result of organ dysfunction and sometimes the nervous system. That is why there are cases when autoimmune diseases provoke the top of hand tingling.

5. Alcoholism

Alcoholism is a severe threat to health. It is a slow-acting killer of the human organism. One of the main consequences of alcoholism is tingling in the hands. After all, alcohol strongly affects the absorption of nutrients, in particular vitamins. It leads to a deficiency of the necessary components for the normal functioning of the nervous system. It can provoke the development of peripheral neuropathy. Then the prickling becomes many times more pronounced.

Alcohol can also cause inflammatory reactions. As a result, signal transmission in the nervous system reduces. It leads to a variety of neurological symptoms. And tingling sensations are number one among them.

Do you need this kind of trouble? We think not. So, when faced with tingling, look for ways how to stop tingling in your hands. Doctors prescribe treatment based on several factors. It includes the duration of the symptom and its location. After all, someone may experience tingling in the right thumb and someone around the shoulders. Accordingly, the treatment for each patient is individual.

Doctors can prescribe both medication and exercises for you. The neurologist determines this by investigating the cause of its appearance. But once you have treatment recommendations, you should follow everything carefully. This approach increases the chances of a faster recovery. So in what ways do doctors stop discomfort in your hands? Keep reading:

1. Medicine

Doctors can prescribe different types of medicine for different stages of tingling. One of the main classes of drugs for treating tingling in the hands is benzodiazepines. They help reduce anxiety and stress, which is often from alcohol. Different forms of these drugs can be in other similar prescriptions. Doctors may also consider amino acid injections. They can help reduce the thirst for alcohol that provokes prickling. To determine the most effective treatment method for you, consult a doctor.

2. Taking vitamins

Vitamins can alleviate the itching in the hands. Vitamin B12 is particularly significant because it helps with hand tingling. This vitamin interacts with other elements, such as folic acid. It regulates the process of cell growth, development, and repair. The primary source of vitamin B12 is animal products and dairy supplements. Taking it is how to stop tingling in your hands. It is important to use vitamin supplements only on the advice of a doctor. And you should stay within the recommended dose.

3. Doing physical exercises

Physical activity is the key to a healthy body. That is why doctors recommend sports to those who suffer from prickling feelings. Sport turns out to be a powerful tool in rehabilitating hand functionality. Active movements during exercise help strengthen muscles, ligaments, and joints. It helps improve blood circulation. Exactly this helps to reduce the discomfort in the hands faster. It is crucial to note that you should follow the doctor’s tips during exercises. Also, try not to overstrain your hands.

4. Alcohol restriction

Doctors forbid the use of alcohol during the treatment of the motor apparatus. And this especially includes the top of hand tingling. This is due to the fact that alcohol contributes to a decrease in the coordination of movements. This makes it difficult to recover from a tingling sensation. Besides, alcohol can interact with medications that are to relieve pain. This can interfere with effective treatment and cause unpredictable consequences for the patient.

FAQ

Does tingling mean poor blood circulation?

Poor blood circulation can lead to this, but it is not always the main reason. Tingling can arise from various other factors. It involves nerve compression, vitamin deficiencies, or even underlying medical conditions.

Can tingling be caused by Covid?

Yes. With the advent of Covid, doctors said that tingling is one of its symptoms. The virus can affect various body parts, including the nervous system. Accordingly, it leads to neurological symptoms like tingling or numbness.

Can exercise heal nerve damage?

Yes. Doctors often recommend physical activity because it is very effective. Exercise positively affects nerve damage by stimulating the production of nerve growth factors. Regular physical activity can help improve muscle function and reduce muscle atrophy. This way, it avoids a tingling sensation.

Do nerves repair themselves?

Yes, nerves can repair themselves through neuroregeneration. This regeneration allows the nerves to reconnect and restore some level of function. But the extent of nerve repair can vary depending on some factors. It includes the severity and location of the damage.

Just such an amazing staff that makes you feel like part of their family. I’ve been going there for over 5 years now... and each visit I get the very best care and treatments that I have ever received in the 20+ years that I’ve been dealing with severe debilitating migraines. Since i started seeing them the number of my migraines has dropped from 15-20 a month to 2-3 every 3 month. I highly recommend them …they will change your life!read more

Dr. Askari was very kind and explained everything so I could understand. The other staff were nice as well. I would... have gave 5 stars but I was a little taken aback when I checked in and had to pay 600.00 upfront. I was obviously stressed, needing to see a neurologist. The staff was so patient and Dr. Ansari was so kind. At one... point he told me to relax, we have time, when I was relaying my history of my condition. That helped ease my stress. I have seen 3 other neurologists and he was the only one who performed any assessment tests on my cognitive and physical skills. At one point I couldn't complete two assessments and got upset and cried. I was told, it's OK. That's why you're here. I was truly impressed, and super pleased with the whole experience!read more

Since my first post my thoughts have changed here. It's unfortunate. My doctor and PA were great, but the office staff... is horrible. They never call you back when they say they will, they misinform you, they cause you too much stress wondering what's going on, they don't keep you posted. They never answer the phone. At this point I've left four messages in the last week, and I have sent three messages. Twice from their portal and one direct email. No response. My appointment is on Monday morning at 8:30am, no confirmation on my insurance and what's going on. What the heck is going on, this is ridiculous!I've given up... the stress her office staff has put me through is just not worth it. You can do so much better, please clean house, either change out your office staff, or find a way for them to be more efficient please. You have to do something. This is not how you want to run your practice. It leaves a very bad impression on your business.read more

I love going to this office. The staff is friendly and helpful. The doctor is great. I am getting the best... neurological tests and treatment I have ever had. The only reason I did not give them a 5 star rating is because it is impossible to reach a live person at the office to reschedule appointments. Every time I have tried to get through to the office it says all people are busy and I am sent to a voicemail. If they could get their phone answering fixed, I would give them a strong 5 stars.read more

Let me start by saying that I have been coming here for years. Due to my autoimmune disease, I am in this office... once every three weeks for multiple hours at a time. The office is very clean and the staff very friendly. My only complaint would be there communication via phone. They aren't the best at responding if you leave a voicemail and expect a call back. I understand that this is prob just due to the sheer number of alls they receive daily. What I can say I like the best about the office are the people. Bobby who handles my infusions is great. I never have any issues with her setting up my infusions. She is very quick to reply to messages sent via text and if she were to leave then my whole opinion of the office may change. I also enjoy people like Matt, Lauren, and Jodi. I appreciate all that they do for me and without this team I'm not sure I would be as happy as I am to visit the office as frequently as I have to. Please ensure that these folks are recognized as they are what makes my visit to this office so tolerable :).read more
