Coffee is a popular product for daily use. Millions of people consume caffeine-containing products daily. It provides many health benefits, including a stimulating effect. Many think drinks based on this component can improve mental abilities and activity. But many people are unaware of the potential dangers associated with caffeine.

So, one of the negative effects of this component is the appearance of an acute headache. Also, excessive consumption leads to high blood pressure and excessive arousal.

In our article, we will look at the possible causes of migraines on the background of coffee intake. We will also tell you about some medications for headaches. Stay with us, read our article, and get useful health knowledge.

How Caffeine Helps with Migraines

It is a widely used stimulant. It can be found in any grocery store in a variety of products, such as:

  • Coffee.
  • Tea.
  • Carbonated drinks.
  • Chocolate.

This component blocks the effects of adenosine. This neurotransmitter makes you feel tired and enhances the perception of pain. This is why coffee is often used as a pain reliever. You can often find it in pain medications.

Some studies show that caffeine can be effective in helping with migraines. It constricts a vessel in the brain. This causes the inflammation to decrease. With this effect, you can quickly reduce migraine and its severity. Besides, it has many other beneficial properties for humans. So, this component can improve:

  • Vigilance.
  • Concentration.
  • Mental activity.

But it is important to be careful when taking caffeine for migraines. If you consume too much coffee, you risk getting the opposite effect. This means that migraines can only get worse. And as a result, this leads to the fact that large doses of components will be required to achieve positive effects. Besides, it can cause side effects such as restlessness, nervousness, and heart palpitations. For these reasons, it is better to limit drinks intake. And avoid caffeine use as the sole treatment for migraines.

Why You Can Have Headache from Caffeine

It is often used as an energy tonic. But this remedy can lead to headaches. In this block of our article, we will look at the causes of headaches from caffeine. This will help to understand the causes and find ways to fix the problem. Here are some popular causes of headaches after coffee:

  • Narrowing of blood vessels. Drinks intake can severely constrict blood vessels in the brain. This leads to less blood flow to the brain, and you experience pain.
  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure. Such a sharp increase leads to stress and headaches.
  • Dehydration of the body. It is known that dehydration can cause headaches as a secondary effect. Coffee has a diuretic effect. This means that when you drink it, you lose fluid in the body more often. This can eventually lead to headaches.
  • Addiction. A cup of cappuccino can be mildly addictive. Thus, with long pauses between doses or a complete rejection of it, you may experience headaches.

How to Prevent Headache from Caffeine?

Drinking espresso is a pleasant routine. But due to its negative effects, the morning cup of it becomes a problem. This is how can you fix this problem:

  1. One of the easiest ways to solve this problem is to limit the component in your diet. In this case, you need to reduce the total intake of this component. And make more pauses between drinking coffee. This way, you can avoid unpleasant consequences.
  2. The second method is to maintain a sufficient amount of water in the body. Thus, you can compensate for the diuretic effect of coffee and avoid pain. In this case, you should drink plenty of water and pause more between latte intakes.
  3. The last way is radical. You should completely get rid of coffee. This is necessary if you are prone to headaches after using it. In this case, you can find another energy source and use it instead.

Why do People with Migraine Respond Differently to Caffeine?

People with migraines respond differently because of factors like:

  • Genetics. Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to sensitivity to component. It can influence their response to it. As a result, caffeine can cause headaches more frequently in these people.
  • Dosage. The amount of coffee consumed can affect the response to it. Consuming too much can lead to increased headaches. But the right amount may provide relief.
  • Individual tolerance. Some people may develop a tolerance to component over time. But others may remain sensitive to it.
  • Migraine triggers. Certain lifestyle factors, such as lack of sleep, stress, or certain foods, can trigger migraines and affect how a person responds to coffee.
  • Other health conditions. Certain health conditions, such as anxiety or depression, can impact how a person responds to component.

Consult a doctor to determine the appropriate amount for each individual. And it’s vital to identify any potential triggers that affect their response to it.

Caffeine Migraine Medication

caffeine migraine medication

Today, it can be found in a variety of headache medications. These include both prescription and over-the-counter drugs. It is often found in over-the-counter headache and migraine medications, such as:

  • Aspirin.
  • Ibuprofen.
  • Acetaminophen.

These migraine medications usually contain caffeine in combination with a pain reliever. This increases the effectiveness of the product. And it also provides extra benefits. For example, aspirin helps reduce the severity of headaches and migraines. This also provides fast pain relief. You can also find it in some prescription headache medications, such as:

  • Ergotamine.
  • Dihydroergotamine.

These drugs narrow the blood vessels in the brain. It helps reduce the severity of headaches and migraines. And caffeine is added to these medications. This mix helps provide extra benefits such as increased alertness and energy levels.

But remember that using a cup of espresso to combat migraines should be under medical supervision. Your healthcare provider can help you determine the appropriate dosage.

Bottom Line

As a result, caffeine is an excellent way to replenish a person’s energy balance quickly. Also, it can have many other beneficial effects. But with the wrong dosage or personal intolerance, caffeine can cause migraines and other negative consequences. It is vital to follow the correct dosage for your body not to harm your internal systems.

  • Does caffeine help migraines?

Caffeine can both help and worsen migraines. It can help by narrowing blood vessels and reducing inflammation. But it can also trigger headaches in some people who are sensitive to it.

  • Can caffeine cause headaches?

Yes, caffeine can cause headaches in people, especially if consumed in excessive amounts. It can lead to withdrawal headaches when suddenly stopped after regularly consuming it.

  • Why does coffee give me a headache?

Some people are sensitive to caffeine and can experience headaches. It can be a side effect of its consumption. Dehydration, stress, and muscle tension can also contribute to caffeine-induced headaches.

  • How much caffeine stops a migraine?

The amount of caffeine needed to stop a migraine can vary among individuals. Generally, consuming around 50-100 mg of caffeine may provide relief. But it is better to consult a doctor to determine the appropriate amount for each individual.

Just such an amazing staff that makes you feel like part of their family. I’ve been going there for over 5 years now... and each visit I get the very best care and treatments that I have ever received in the 20+ years that I’ve been dealing with severe debilitating migraines. Since i started seeing them the number of my migraines has dropped from 15-20 a month to 2-3 every 3 month. I highly recommend them …they will change your life!read more

Dr. Askari was very kind and explained everything so I could understand. The other staff were nice as well. I would... have gave 5 stars but I was a little taken aback when I checked in and had to pay 600.00 upfront. I think that should have been discussed in a appointment confirmation call or email just so I could have been more

I was obviously stressed, needing to see a neurologist. The staff was so patient and Dr. Ansari was so kind. At one... point he told me to relax, we have time, when I was relaying my history of my condition. That helped ease my stress. I have seen 3 other neurologists and he was the only one who performed any assessment tests on my cognitive and physical skills. At one point I couldn't complete two assessments and got upset and cried. I was told, it's OK. That's why you're here. I was truly impressed, and super pleased with the whole experience!read more

Since my first post my thoughts have changed here. It's unfortunate. My doctor and PA were great, but the office staff... is horrible. They never call you back when they say they will, they misinform you, they cause you too much stress wondering what's going on, they don't keep you posted. They never answer the phone. At this point I've left four messages in the last week, and I have sent three messages. Twice from their portal and one direct email. No response. My appointment is on Monday morning at 8:30am, no confirmation on my insurance and what's going on. What the heck is going on, this is ridiculous!I've given up... the stress her office staff has put me through is just not worth it. You can do so much better, please clean house, either change out your office staff, or find a way for them to be more efficient please. You have to do something. This is not how you want to run your practice. It leaves a very bad impression on your more

I love going to this office. The staff is friendly and helpful. The doctor is great. I am getting the best... neurological tests and treatment I have ever had. The only reason I did not give them a 5 star rating is because it is impossible to reach a live person at the office to reschedule appointments. Every time I have tried to get through to the office it says all people are busy and I am sent to a voicemail. If they could get their phone answering fixed, I would give them a strong 5 more

Let me start by saying that I have been coming here for years. Due to my autoimmune disease, I am in this office... once every three weeks for multiple hours at a time. The office is very clean and the staff very friendly. My only complaint would be there communication via phone. They aren't the best at responding if you leave a voicemail and expect a call back. I understand that this is prob just due to the sheer number of alls they receive daily. What I can say I like the best about the office are the people. Bobby who handles my infusions is great. I never have any issues with her setting up my infusions. She is very quick to reply to messages sent via text and if she were to leave then my whole opinion of the office may change. I also enjoy people like Matt, Lauren, and Jodi. I appreciate all that they do for me and without this team I'm not sure I would be as happy as I am to visit the office as frequently as I have to. Please ensure that these folks are recognized as they are what makes my visit to this office so tolerable :).read more
