A neurologist is a physician who practices in diagnosing, managing, and treating disorders associated with the nervous system and the brain. A neurologist deals with conditions that affect the central nervous system, which is the spinal cord and the brain, as well as those that affect the peripheral nervous system or sensory receptors.

Some of the neurological disorders that a neurologist can help treat or manage include:

  • Chronic headaches and migraines
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Epilepsy
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Tremors
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases
  • Brain and spinal cord injuries

When to See a Neurologist

One of the most common symptoms of a neurological disorder is a chronic headache that will not go away. Some of the other signs that you should contact Lone Star Neurology are:

If you Start Experiencing Seizures

Seizures are a sign of brain disturbance. They can cause loss of consciousness, uncontrolled movements, or strange sensations. Seizures are not always a sign of a neurological disorder as they may be caused by conditions such as low blood sugar or withdrawal from drug and substance abuse. Consult your physician or a neurologist if you suddenly start experiencing seizures.

In the Case of Brain Trauma or Spinal Cord Injury

Injuries while participating in sports, car accidents, and falls are some of the most common causes of brain trauma and spinal cord injuries. An injury to the brain could result in dizziness, headaches, loss of consciousness, and seizures. Spinal cord injuries can result in loss of movement below the injured area and numbness. Your neurologist may recommend treatment procedures such as physical therapy and medication.

Mobility Problems

This includes such problems as unintentional jerks or tremors, difficulty walking, and difficulty maintaining body balance. Tremors may be caused by anxiety or certain medication. However, if mobility problems are unexplained and are affecting your daily life, it is time to see a neurologist.

If you Start Experiencing Dizzy Spells and Vision Loss

Your doctor may refer you to a neurologist if they establish that the dizziness is a result of vertigo or disequilibrium. Also, if they establish whether the vision loss is as a result of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, or glaucoma, you may be referred to a neurologist.

If you Experience Numbness or a Tingling Sensation

While this could be due to a lack of blood circulation in the affected area, it may also be a sign of a neurological disorder. You may need to visit a neurologist if this happens suddenly or on one side of your body. Your physician will review your symptoms and advise you accordingly.

Even in the absence of the above symptoms, you will need to be checked by a neurologist if your family has a history of such conditions as multiple sclerosis. Behavioral changes such as confusion and loss of memory could be a sign of Alzheimer’s, in which case you should see a neurologist.
